"O, Shariputra! Form is no other than emptiness. Emptiness no other than form. Form is exactly emptiness. Emptiness exactly form." - The Heart Sutra To my mind, "meaning" is utterly subjective, ineffable, and attempts toward its expression are futile. As an artist I do not deal with meaning or concepts, except to say that an image or an artwork of mine may be derived or impelled by a subjective, sensual experience that in turn has given way to thoughts strung into meanings or concepts. These structures are reflected in the arrangement of marks - line, tone, color - or indeed the arrangement of recognizable signs. I may only deal with structure. Structure, or structures, coalesce as images, or words, or images of words, or words that imply images, or images that imply words, and so forth - the myriad permutations are infinite. What the art means, then, is an open question, as it exists separate and exceptional to the scaffolding that gave it form. And form, in all its form, is the issue at hand. September, 2009 |
